As modernization is gradually gaining ground in our society, it is disheartening to note that banks can still go all way out to make and implement policies that will totally exclude persons with disabilities from having in Nigeria, their incapacitation is not so much in their disabilities as it is in the stigma, discrimination and prejudice they encounter in society on daily basis.
In the light of the above, ASCEND; a socio–political pressure organization is committed to championing the holistic empowerment of person with disabilities in Nigeria. We promote their active participation in every sphere of life, particularly in polities and create awareness on the need for an equal level playing field for all Nigeria with special focus on persons with disabilities. We have carried out several advocacy visits, political mobilization programme such as National rally Nigeria with disabilities, e.t.c
On the 29th of September, 2007, we wrote to all the Managing Director of all the commercial bank in Nigeria, intimating them of the problem person with disabilities are facing in accessing the banks due to the new security doors most doors most banks had installed and we still installing, as well as the architectural barriers that militate against easy access to the bank by persons with disabilities. Unfortunately, none of the banks responded to our letter and none has taken any significant action to ameliorate the situation.
It is in the light of the above that we have decided to take the bull by the horn by picking the banks on this issue. Hence, we will start with them.
